ROMULO GALICANO My work is technically academic and my philosophical approach is abstract. My first concern is the integrity of the whole. The vertical lines in my painting is a reconciliation between opposite poles and the merging of the subjective and the objective, creating a new meaningful work of Art. I first met Mulong Galicano at Strumms. Through the coarse of dinner, his penchant for various genres of music became apparent. He intimated to me that depending on the type of painting he renders, he matches it with music that imbibes the texture he is after. I offered compile an audio CD that I thought might help him render a protest painting to mock the NCCAs selection process for National Artists; that year, many deserving artists were bumped off or deliberately overlooked by the selection panel to accomodate the pets of then president Arroyo. He showed me a facsimile in gloomy sepia depicting a repertory of artists milling around a Parthenon-like setting with a fallen Philippine flag in the background. Perfect...I sent him some music by Ralph Towner and his group Oregon. His sound system is nothing short of esoteric and in our own private tertullia, I was lucky enough to witness him paint away...Waterwheel playing in the background. Music truly intensifies a visual artists renditions...Gainsborough revisited.
