RUINS OF THE WEEK: Lindisfarne Priory. Founded by Aidan, a monk from Iona in 634 on the island of Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, off the Northeast coast of England. St. Cuthbert was abbot there and his remains ensured that the priory became a major center of pilgrimage. The famous Lindisfarne Gospels were created there in the early 700s. Lindisfarne was destroyed by Viking raids in 793, and the monks moved the remains of Cuthbert and the Gospels to Durham Cathedral. The priory was rebuilt in 1093 as a Benedictine house and remained firmly established there until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536.
