RUSSIA - UKRAINE - CRIMEA - EU - USA - NATO These are the major players in the continuing stare-down going on over the Russian military invasion into Crimea. Today (Sunday 16 March 2014) Crimeans are holding a REFERENDUM vote on whether or not to secede from Ukraine and re-join Russia. Ukraines Government in Kiev, along with the EU and the USA see the referendum as illegal. The key is what will happen today when the vote is completed. If they choose secession - Will Putin go along with it? The Russian Parliament is to meet later this month to determine the issue on their side. However, Putin has more leverage against the west if he keeps Crimea in limbo. The EU has stalled their deal with Russia for natural gas which hurts Russia economically and the west including the U.S. have called for sanctions against Russia. Will the Russian forces invade Ukraine proper? They are set up along the borders to do just that. (See photo) Russia has already sunk older ships in the Black Sea to keep the Ukrainian fleet bottled up in port. An ethnic group in Crimea that are Muslim background are the Tartars. They were massacred in past history by the Russians and they want revenge. So they will bring trouble and have vowed to fight a terrorist style war against Russia if the vote is for secession.
