RUWON Star Children’s Home RUWON Star Children’s Home started from humble beginnings in late 2012 after the realisation that many children in Nepal are continuing to face serious problems in their home life, and consequently their academic life. RUWON Star Children home is the joint idea of Rural Women’s Network Nepal and Stella Star Sweden. Stella Star is a relief organisation directed at children in Nepal. After a visit to Nepal by key members of Stella Star, it was obvious to them that there was much work to be done for other girls who, facing grim circumstances, have nowhere to turn. RUWON Nepal conducts programs to enhance women’s rights and empower young children, and through their work regularly come into contact with children in need of assistance. Children whose parents are deceased, who come from an abusive home, have disabled parents or have been neglected by their family are given special financial support to afford school uniforms, stationary, school books and bags. For the students of public schools RUWON runs Child Clubs to raise awareness of their right to a childhood and training on how to develop leadership qualities. But for the more extreme cases, it was RUWON’s wish to do something more for them. After a partnership was established with Stella Star, the Children’s Home was registered and became open to accepting children in May 2013. With reliable funding girl children were welcomed in and offered a homely environment to further their academic dreams. The Children’s Home places emphasis on high academic achievement, and thus the girls given extra tuition, incentives to strive hard and equal, loving care from the family. Girls not living in the home but struggling with studies are also invited for morning extra tuition classes in English, and are also provided with school uniform and stationary. The Home is a place for all girls struggling to maintain their rights to a childhood to come and feel at ease. In the short to medium term future it is planned that up to fifty girls will be able to stay in the home. In the long term future up to two hundred girls are hoped to reside in a purpose-built facility catering to their academic, physical and psychological needs. Child girls with an interest in social work and desire to contribute back to RUWON are also included in the future plan in terms of sustaining operations and management. Education and protection of child rights are the priorities for Stella Star Home and with proper supervision and care this vision is anticipated to flourish in the young girls own lives.
