Rabbit Care - Housing Rabbits can be housed outdoors or totally indoors. If housing outdoors, the ideal hutch should be tall enough for the rabbit to stand up fully on its hind limbs and tall enough for it to take at least 2-3 successive hops. It should be placed in a well-ventilated area and protected from the elements of weathers. Thick layers of soft bedding such as straw or grass hays are recommended. Avoid pine or cedar shavings or wood chips as they can cause respiratory irritation and liver damage. Rabbits can be readily toilet trained, as they tend to use the same area for urinating and defecating. To train them, supply litter trays with straw/hay/recycled paper or organic pellets. Ensure that bedding and soiled areas are cleaned regularly as ammonia build-up from their wastes can irritate eyes and airways. Prolonged contact with soiled bedding/litter may also increase the likelihood of foot disease.
