Rabbit breeders and owners, take note. Long read, but impoprtant. Shared with permission. Ah Easter is coming, tis the time of year that people LIE about rabbits. Right now the popular lie is 95% of rabbits sold at Easter die. Where does this come from? Nobody knows. It is much like yrs ago when people said 90%. I spent alot of time tracking down that stat and found out its made up. Back then nobody had numbers for shelter rabbits, nobody knew how many rabbits were sold period let alone for Easter. So I found out the 90% was simply made up. When people started asking questions activists discussed just saying most so the numbers police would leave them along. In either case its a LIE. Then came the 3rd most euthanized, again nobody has numbers so you cant w/ any accuracy make such statements. We also have activists saying rabbits are the 3rd most popular pet...Ah there actually are estimate for pet population and it proves that statement is also FALSE. Rabbits are more like 7th or 8th according to the AVMA, same yrs ago from both AVMA & APPMA. If people especially breeders dont see the problem w/ the 95% made up lie maybe because they think the msg matters more...remind them that when lawmakers see it & likely will if it gets plastered all over, boy it sure would seem like a good idea to regulate rabbit breeders to death when 95% of rabbits sold end up dead...think about that....tell others to think about that. Sharing the original makes it become fact and it will be harder to argue it isnt when everybody & their grandmother are sharing it. Im on very very few rabbit lists so maybe others will share these thoughts, that by passing the false 95% around were putting our own necks in a legislative noose & jumping. Im sure there are better ways to spread a positive dont impulse buy msg w/out making up stats that will lead to legislation. Actually...just look at Chicago, ok right now just a pet store ban but it also means breeders lost a cull outlet, but it could always be expanded to include breeders and ARAs told the council that according to H$U$ 80% of rabbits sold die. I checked w/ H$U$ & got a response yesterday-this 80% is NOT theirs. It comes from an HR$ article however HR$ doesnt keep records etc and have not gotten back to me about the specific article to prove their estimate. But again nobody knows how many rabbits are sold, nobody is tracking shelter numbers, nobody ran a study to follow a sample of sold pet rabbits to see how many died, 80%, 90%, 95% is all made up based on NOTHING.
