Race will always proceed me in some cases….. Today a Soldier came to my office and said. “Sir, you realize you are the only black Major (Army Officer) within the brigade?” I wasn’t offended by the way he brought it up but intrigued of how important it was to him that I knew that statistic. I was at a loss for words because he was waiting for me to say something and I could only say well I hope I don’t let anyone down jokingly. Internally, as the conversation processed in my head, I thought I just want people to see me as Ian who happens to be black. I can’t blame him because as a young officer that was the lens I saw things but that was until a senior black officer told me just because you are black and I am black I am not going to give you favor. I honestly valued that officer’s advice because it stopped me from wanting a hand out for being a black officer and strive to be a good ARMY OFFICER ;)
