Racing Selections 081813 SUNDAY No sense in wasting anytime- the pace of modern life is oh so fast- to be sitting under the Elm with a comely lass, a smoke and a picnic lunch- but few are those entitled to such refreshments for the spirit and the body- for the verdict is by “the sweat of your brow” and the judgment seems to have been sealed with a most powerful adhesive- Del Mar Race 1- turf milers- Del Mar is a place where the beautiful people can truly live up to their nom de plumes - the weather remains perfect for the last 50 years- the sea breeze calms the jitters, modifies the frustrations, and the scenery would cause the Beach Boys to wax their boards- the longest shot on the slate will be Mr. Pender’s claim HOLIDAY N NEWPORT -jockey Pedroza, is a skilled journeyman and the saying is the best time to try a horse is when its attempting something new in its first struggle at it- and we find transcendental stallion Vice Regent, in the 3rd remove of this ff 14-b prayer- Race 2- sprinters- the big dropdown is METROPOLITAN MAN -who may be a nice one at 8/1 ML- unless it broke down after a sizzling work the other day- but they have the track vet to check on that- crashing from 40K to 12K - and he has been off-duty since the Preakness - the moody outstanding Whittingham trainee Quack, sired the 3rd dam in this opus- also another 14-B projectile- which is the family of Pretty Polly’s half sister- Race 3- dirt route- at 8yo WINSOME CHARM is a hesitant choice but he’s been in the money 16 out of 40 tries- having run his last 10 races on the turf he gets to hear his feet rattle and some runners respond to that sort of thing- his bottom is Euro grass types but his sire just missed winning the 1997 US triple crown, which is a dirt thing- Race 4- The Rancho Bernardo H. 6.5 furlongs dirt- 150K added- that 45 years ago was the grand prize if you won the Kentucky Derby!! dean of California trainers Ron McAnally gives a leg up to dean of Del Mar riders Gary Stevens- in what appears to be old timers day thus far at the western spa- the “hoss” is SUGARINTHEMORNING -who tries open company after failing against restricted company- “Sugar” hasn’t won in a month of Sundays - but he is a 5 generation outcross, with speedy Pancho Villa, residing is his 3rd remove- the latter was a son of lightning filly Crimson Saint, arguably one of the 10 fastest females in the histories- Race 5- turf - trainer N. Drysdale, who is harder to catch than Daisy Mae in the pea patch- sends out rail hoss KID DREAMS -- BRED AND OWNED BY BIG TIMER Robert S Evans, this item is inbred to beau ideal Buckpasser, a horse who caused the ladies to faint and men to squeal like kids at Disneyland- the 10th dam of this melodrama was great Idle Fancy ancestress to Canadian Champ & Singing Wood and triumphant racing female Cicada etc. Race 6- sprinting- GNARLY DUDE -had reeled off 3 in a row before he got in over his head and red hot Sadler gives “smokiest” Joe T. a leg up - speculators might like to punch out a trifecta with 6/1 Malibu Knight and 10/1 First Strike-- Race 7- dirt tyros- a good price 12/1 ML might be attached to recuperating Baffert’s first time starter CONSECRATE - Baffert, like his east coast twin “agent” Pletcher- has enough horses in his barn to fund a sequel to Ben-Hur- in this race Baffert also has La Quintessa and Sunset Strip, ready to saddle up - but to me his Pulpit, filly seems to be the “one” -keep your fingers crossed- she is inbred (if that is the word) to mightiest of the mighty Secretariat via daughters- the ff is that of Italian Oaks (1951) 2nd Milonga - Race 8- The Solana Beach H. is for Cal-bred females - on the outside is a real outsider WARREN’S FLASHER -who until her last race had exhibited a modicum of “form” & gifted jockey “Frenchie” Leparoux gets the ride and I would not dismiss this mare out of hand- 12/1 is the ML- Race 9- cal bred maiden types- on the rail is TAKEN BY SURPRISE who showed some early foot before backing up faster than a fat man’s commode- the 3rd dam was a half sis to the 1974 centennial Kentucky Derby winner- Race 10- turf milers- a new name to me is Kelly Blake, who has rail runner APOSTLE PAUL in this mix- Rich Gere said to Susan Sarandon “life is cold” and she replied “get a warm overcoat”- this dark bay stems from the familiar (23-B) family of Solidity (1957)- Saratoga Race 1- Sunday at the eastern headwaters of US racing begins with smart looking tyros- - “coach” Lucas is due to dip his beak into the healing waters sooner of later and here busts out LE PLUME- a damsel by top notch stud Smart Strike- he is the progenitor of behemoth Curlin, who sired this years Belmont Stakes hero, as well as English Channel, who sired the 2012 Queens Plate winner- the morning works will not recall Princes Doreen or even “Old Mudhen” but not every horse is a morning wonder- the 4th dam herein was Avatar’s half-sis - Avatar, was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen when he paraded to the post in the ‘75 Kentucky Derby- Race 2- state bred MC females sprinting- a long shot aspirant will be BROADWAY MUSIC GAL - her workouts seem to indicate she was carrying Prince Fielder on her back- her dam Miss Broad, was inbred 3x3 to super Hoist The Flag, who broke down upon the precipice of “glory”- Race 3- top trainer D. Romans, has a grey colt worth some thought in this 7f test- GREY OAK - THIS HOSS APPEARS TO BE “SKIP-HITTING” AND Sunday’s race marks its on-duty sign to go on (theoretically) “granny” was champion Meadow Star- Race 4- inner turf mile- way outside is EL CORRIENTE whose “form” printout resembles Whitey Bolger’s “yellow sheet” - there must be someone better to back? LIFE’S A ROAR seems to have a bit of speed- and there is nothing wrong with trying a few bucks with the aforementioned pair tied to a “box” -might get 75-1 -- Race 5- turf tyros well-heeled - War Front, is a very in demand stud and a son of quick as Superman to Lois Lane’s apartment, Danzig- “agent” Pletcher, appears to have the “ace” here with 5/2 BASHART -whose granny was inbred to Princequillo & Hyperion & Nearco!! Race 6- state bred routers - Junior Rocco, is the jockey and John Kimmel, the trainer of EGO FRIENDLY -a dullard son of Unbridled Star- race fans will recall its 3rd dam Taisez Vous --AS A STAR ON THE WEST COAST - THIS IS THE Judy O’Grady band of broodmares- Race 7- state bred turf sprinters- this appears a battle between 10/1 wishbone WHITE SANGRIA and rail item AVES HALO --- ALSO IN THE PICTURE IN THIS HEADACHE MAY BE --White Crane -the latter two trained by Ms. Rice, while long shot “sangria” is an operative of TM Bush- Race 8- is the Lake Placid Stakes a G2 turf route- top rider Rosario, J. gets on CONCISE - arriving from Euroworld the 3yo son of Belmont Stakes winner Lemon Drop Kid, ran a excellent mile and 3/16ths recently at the spa- and it does not take much imagination to think she’ll be better in her 2nd run the US- the distance is shorter, but that may be beneficial, since nobody these days likes to marathon - the ff are the 2-O contingent and some recent good ones from that group would be >>Saratoga Boot & Princess Arabella, winner of the Sunland Oaks- also Town Prize etc.- Race 9- turf sprinters- (yet again)- CHANNEL MARKET -is the progeny of Purim, a sire who tragically died so young- this gelding appears to give his best shot every time he runs and you can’t get more than that from any worker whose pay is in carrots and apples- the family is that of top notch broodmare Vali (FR)- Race 10- long distance turf maidens- Rosie Nopravnick, is riding in top form and her mount AFLUUTER -is conditioned by turf course mastermind JE Sheppard- Beau Purple, a HA Jerkens runner shocked the great Kelso, long ago, is the sire of the 3rd dam- the family is the 4-R troop best known in recent moons for launching Zenyatta, a no-doze away from retiring with a spotless sheet- Race 11- turf- Helen Groves, is the owner of CORONETTE -who makes its debut in this race- if memory serves Ms. Groves and her husband Franklin (?) purchased Mr. Prospector’s full brother Kentucky Gold, years ago, was it for 600K? which at the time may have been the highest tab signed for a yearling- KG couldn’t run from here to there, which is one of the great mysteries of blood-lines -- how one brother might be a king like Mr. Prospector, while the full brother, Kentucky Gold, outwardly a precision machine, had the racing desire of a tortoise- CORONETTE -shows Dr. Fager in her papers at 5x3 via his daughters Killaloe and unraced Royal Stance- Harry Watnik @ 2013
