Racing fans were treated to a feast on Sunday’s Ronde van Vlaanderen, with Ellen van Dijk (Boels Dolmans Cycling Team) taking a distinctly Fabian-esque 27km solo attack in the women’s race. Van Dijk’s move was a masterclass in timing and team tactics. She launched from a group of favourites, including the on-form Emma Johansson (Orica-AIS), teammate Lizzie Armistead, and Italian Elisa Longo Borghini (Team Hitec Products). The reigning World Champion in the time trial, Van Dijk used the final ten climbs to build her lead past 40 seconds. The chase became a stop/start affair, with the favourites hesitant to pull Olympian Armistead to the line. Van Dijk eventually won with more than a minute over the chasers, crossing the line with no one else in the finish line camera’s shot. And in case there isn’t enough reason to laud Marianne Vos, she took time out from her extended off-season rest to hand up bottles to her teammates in the feedzone.
