Racing selections 062813 Friday Saturday in Ireland one of the best races in the world gets a go- the Irish Derby, to be raced at the Curragh, a wild and windy fairgrounds- a relatively compact group of 9 runners are expected to vie for the prizes and prestige- & Magnier & Tabor & Smith’s Epsom “Darby” star Ruler of the World, is preparing to become another dual winner of the great British Isles 3yo classics the Derby and the Darby- the gifted son of Galileo, will have to be at his best to stave off some hungry rivals- the distance is 1 mile and a half- a look at the grapplers follows: The Irish Derby has been running rain or shine since 1866 and the honor roll is impressive>Orby & Bachelors Double & Gallinaria & Ballymoss & mighty Shergar- just a few of the spectacular thoroughbreds to have graced the Curragh winners enclosure- the world’s leading stallion, most virile Galileo, won the race in 2001 besting arch rival Golan, amongst others- in the 2013 edition, Galileo is sire to favored Ruler of the World, as well as Mr. O’Flynn’s- Galileo Rock- Cap O’Rushes has won a couple of races for Godolphin and is a son of New Approach - the female tribe are the “Magnolia’s thru Fast Line” one of the major thoroughfares of race horse class- the beautiful accordion like speedball Torsion, emerged from this family 40 years ago to trounce Mr. Prospector, in the greatest sprint race I ever saw- Value of Gold, the dam was G1 placed in France- the sire New Approach, is a classic placed son of ….you guessed it, virile super stallion Galileo! Festive Cheer- is a French bred by tremendous stallion Montjeu (also of the Sadler’s Wells academy of superior stallions)- he is also owned by the connections of Ruler of the World, so we may assume he’s in there to assure a true pace- no Preakness 2013 shenanigans welcome at the Curragh!- a family 8-d operative Festive Cheer, has 1 win under his saddlebags- Galileo Rock- also has 1 win on his resume-therefore the casual race fan will be sure to notice that a bunch of victories and many races and “points” are not a necessity to get into a Euro Classic race- a member of the famed house of “Carpet Slipper 5-H” Galileo Rock, has a long winded Euro style pedigree- the family is that of epochal stallion Sadlers’ Wells, who is well on his way to becoming the most influential stallion of the modern day- Libertarian -is also a grandson of Galileo, and his dosage is >1-1-7-3-2 which is notable as all shelves on the dosage “bookcase” are filled- the female family is a Queen Mary branch- 10-C thru the 6th dam Agars Plough, winner of the 1955 Irish Oaks! She was a daughter of unbeaten Combat- a very fine horse overshadowed by a legend “Tudor Minstrel” -the pair may have been stalemates in the haras of tycoon de Whiskey, JW Dewar- Little White Cloud -is a son of the Aga Khan’s exemplary racing star Dalakhani- this female family sits under the Never Bend male line- and the cross is a good one - the famed Millenary is a member of this 1-L branch - the family has been a powerhouse in Irish racing for quite a spell- as for the sire here, Dalakhani, he won 8 of 9 starts finishing 2nd when he did not win- on his ledger are wins in the “Arc” and the French Derby!! Ralston Road-is a son of Dylan Thomas, the latter emptied my pockets when he came to the US- Dylan Thomas, has a record comparable to the best runners anywhere on the planet, having won the “Arc” and the Irish Derby- his dosage is >4-5-16-1-2 the “preferred shape” to those who follow that branch of mysticism- as for Ralston Road, he has had multiple chances to show he is special but he seems not- his pedigree is a confluence of Northern Dancer male line warriors Galileo and Danehill!- he might be a pest to the chalk Saturday - his female roots are 11-C thru a Gohanna daughter foaled in 1803- Ruler of the World -seems to have the red carpet rolled out for him to take away the prized Irish and English derby double- he has enough “breeding” to supply a bakers dozen stakes winners and it is Missy Baba’s illustrious line to which he calls home- this “classic” crew is responsible for AP Indy his half brother Summer Squall and Lemon Drop Kid, all classic winners- which is what Ruler of the World, is as well- he is unbeaten and should stay that way- thru Saturday anyway- Sugar Boy- is by Authorized, winner of the 2007 English Derby and a son of monumental Montjeu, as well- without doubt Sugar Boy has enough “pedigree” to knock Ruler of the World off his throne- a member of family 1-K - which returns to 4th dam French Oaks star Sweet Mimosa- this is a family of long winded types like Levross- Sugar Boy’s family tree has such Northern Dancer offspring as Sadler’s Wells & Nijinsky & Lyphard sprinkled within- and for spice there is distant linkage to mad Tourbillion, from whose male line Sweet Mimosa was calved- Trading Leather -brings this petit review to conclusion and he is a son of Teofilo, who also is a son of Galileo! The female family of “leather” is the seldom seen “25” bunch - but it is a feisty strand of thoroughbred pulchritude, Unaccounted For and Mrs. Penny, in their yearbooks- etc. in fact if memory serves Secretariat might have been engaged to revitalize this band in the US thru a liaison with speedy My Card- let me see, just a moment- indeed my long term memory is not yet useless- the female Miss Secretariat, the result - a foal of 1975 Miss Secretariat, achieved little distinction as a broodmare- but Trading Leather, is G1 placed- his all-important 5th dam Ten Double, has the interesting pedigree of Decathlon x Roodles x Princequillo!- the family returns to Man O War’s daughter of 1937 Furlough, later ancestress to My Card and her splendid brother (½) One Count, a winner of the Belmont Stakes!
