Racism: a motion of interest going before next months GAA Congress: Motion 42 – Racist and Sectarian Abuse Gives the referee the power to send a player who uses racist or sectarian language off. The rule, as it stands, doesn’t explicitly state that such abusive language is a sending off offence. For those of you who know your rule book off by heart here is the full text: Motion 42 – Racist and Sectarian Abuse (42) (A) Add to Rules 5, Aggressive Fouls, Playing Rules of Hurling and Football by including as 5.34 (Hurling) and 5.29 (Football). “To act by deed, word or gesture of a racist, sectarian or anti inclusion/diversity nature against an opponent. “ Penalty as after 5.33 (Hurling)/ 5.28 (Football) - Subsequent Rules to be renumbered accordingly. (B) Amend Rule 7.2(b) Category IV by adding: “(ix) An act by deed, word or gesture of a racist, sectarian or anti inclusion/diversity nature. Exceptions: add- “A breach of (ix) shall be penalised under Rule 7.2(e). (C) Amend Rule 7.2(e) to read: “Misconduct Considered to have Discredited the Association. This shall include breaches of Rule 1.12 Official Guide Part 1, and Rules 5.34 (Hurling) and 5.29 (Football) Aggressive Fouls, Playing Rules, Official Guide Part 2. Penalties: As in current Rule and add: “Breaches of the specific Rules stated above shall additionally be subject to provisions of the Code of Conduct on these matters adopted by Central Council (see Appendix 2) - Include reference to the Code of Conduct in Appendix 2. - Delete reference to Penalty in Rule 1.12 (as an Ethos Rule should not show a Penalty) and reposition in Rule 7.2(e) as included above.
