Radaza to appoint ‘beautification czar’ FOR her second term, Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza vowed to reduce the classroom shortage, generate more jobs and roll out ecotourism initiatives that will benefit the communities. During her inaugural address yesterday, Radaza also asked the City Council to pass an ordinance giving P100,000 to each centenarian. She announced she will appoint a person from the private sector as a “city beautification czar” within the month. The mayor delivered her speech before the new city legislators in the session hall past 2 p.m. She reported her achievements during her previous term, including the construction of more classrooms and daycare centers. “While we have substantially reduced our classroom shortage in my first term, I want to further reduce it by 50 percent in the next three years,” she said. She reiterated her call for teachers and principals to “tap the generosity” of wealthy families and business owners in their communities. Radaza said she has turned the city into a “haven for investments”, with Megaworld Corp. investing P20 billion in the city. “Another P20 billion will be poured in by an investor for a 400-hectare reclamation project from Barangays Ibo to Mactan,” she said. She said the Ayala Corp. has announced it will develop a 12-hectare property across the Mactan Shangri-La Resort and Spa. “My desire for calibrated development has resulted in the creation of over 80,000 jobs in the next five to 10 years,” she said. Job generation Radaza said job generation is a top priority of her administration. “At the close of my first term, we launched a handful of ecotourism initiatives. I will fast-track the rollout of these programs so that its impact to the community will be felt,” she said. One of these initiatives is the Olango My Getaway, which features a culinary tour on bike and bird-watching in Olango Island. The City will create a task force that will ensure the efficient collection of garbage and another one to ensure all streets are well-lighted. “We will continue to deliver efficient health services by ensuring that medicines will be at all times available in our public hospital, city jail, home care and in the 39 health centers,” Radaza said. Senior citizens During the campaign for the May elections, Radaza said she would push for the passage of an ordinance that will give P100,000 to every senior citizen who turns 100. The centenarian will receive the same amount with an additional P1,000 for each subsequent year. As part of efforts to attract more investors and tourists, Radaza said she will appoint a person from the private sector to spearhead beautification projects. With Cebu bidding to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in 2015, she said the city may be able host some of the ministerial meetings. “We must work on it now. We have to show them that Lapu-Lapu City is ready for the world,” she said. Sun Star Cebu
