Radial Rage Racer Bio: Bob Clayton Story By: Ricky Tippett Last Season, Bob Clayton and the Crazy Bob Racing Team purchased this beautiful Turbocharged 1999 Mustang Cobra to compete in the popular X275 category at MIR. Prior to the purchase, the team campaigned a Nitrous Small Block combination which they had refined and improved upon since venturing into heads up racing in 2010. Often the struggle can be overwhelming when switching from a tried and true Nitrous Oxide set up, to the diverse demands of Electronic Fuel Injection and the concepts which it takes to make a Turbocharged car consistently go down the race track. Simple changes such as how the driver has to take the staging beam while building boost and the different maintenance required between rounds can often take multiple seasons to adapt to. Patrick Barnhill of PTP Racing has been instrumental in Bob and his team’s recent success, easing the pain of the aforementioned change of power adder. Almost exactly 1 month from his first trip down the race track in the new car, Bob achieved a personal best E.T. of 4.76 at 155 MPH in X275 trim. A very respectable E.T. becomes even more impressive with one look under the hood. A 347 cubic inch Small Block Ford fitted with a set of Trick Flow Specialties High Port cylinder heads, so well put together that not only can it make lap after lap pushing in excess of 1700 horse power, but also make a run at stealing a trophy or two at your local car show. Pushing 30+ lbs of boost into the Small Block is a Garrett GTX-55 88MM Turbocharger. Rossler Transmissions and TCI Performance supply the Powerglide Transmission and Outlaw X Torque Converter. Bob and his team are chomping at the bit to kick off the 2014 season to continue building on last year’s success. They will get their chance to do so April 11th-13th at Maryland Int’l Raceways 6th annual Door Wars.
