You extend a house by adding rooms. You extend the time needed to do something. To expand is to get larger in a number of directions at the same time. You blow up a balloon to make it expand. Water expands when it freezes. ‘Expand’ tends to be used for things that aren’t physical objects. You expand your business. You expand your influence.
