[Rag to Riches] I remembered a co-colleague told me this 20 years ago, Times has changed. Now is impossible to have rag to riches story. I was young and did not reply because I was taught to respect my senior. But Im blessed that I did not understand what she meant, hence I did not take it to heart. Recently, I heard the same statement again. This time, I smiled. This thinking cannot be further than the truth. In fact, it is easier and easier to have rag to riches examples because 1. We have access to abundance of information due to internet. 2. From the above, we have a bigger connected global market than segmented local market. 3. There are plenty of resources, tools and processes to support one idea that are relatively low cost or even free. 4. There are more successful mentors and teachers to learn from. 5. There are more options apart from just entrepreneurship. Investing is one of them. 6. There are foods and technologies that make us look better, healthier and live longer. The truth is there will always be rag to riches stories at every era and time period. You will see some people fufilling their wildest dreams. Ma Yun is a classic example, from earning $20 in the early days to becoming Chinas richest man (based on last Monday NYSE Alibaba closing price. But little do people know that he become a street hawker for 3 years to support his initial language translation business. And his second yellow page dot com business was taken over by the government, resulting working in a government agency for couple of years befogging starting Alibaba at age 34) Then why is it that majority of the people are still struggling financially or/and never get to fulfil their dreams? Your take? And before you start to believe it is impossible in Singapore, please know that I am an underdog that make it good and I know many others that did way better despite their poor background. valuegrowthworkshop
