Raiders enter PSL finals for first time The RC Cola-Air Force Raiders went through an ordeal against the PLDT Home TVolution Power Attackers as they needed five sets with the score of 16-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-20, 15-12 to enter the finals for the first time at the Philippine SuperLiga in the semifinals of the women’s division on July 20 at the Cuneta Astrodome. After the Power Attackers went ahead, 11-8, in the fifth set, Maika Ortiz and Joy Cases scored six of the final eight points of the match. The Raiders went to Ortiz from the wing in the last two points, her first hit going off the block and the match winner a running crosscourt attack. “Yung (instruction) na wala na magd-drop ball, lahat na papaluin, gumana lahat,” said RC Cola-Philippine Air Force coach Clarence Esteban. Four players scored in double figures for the Raiders with Ortiz leading the way with 17 points, 14 of them attack and three of them block points. De La Salle University-Dasmarinas alumnae Iari Yongco and Jennifer Manzano combined for 23 markers, while Joy Cases had ten. RC Cola-PAF utilized their height advantage with ten blocks as PLDT only had five. “Kapag lumalayo ang kalaban namin, medyo nawawala yung receive namin,” Esteban remarked on the rollercoaster match, which took about two and a half hours to conclude. PLDT Home was headed by captain Suzanne Roces with 20 points, while Louann Latigay finished with 18. Sasa Devanadera came up with ten points as coach Roger Gorayeb was once again frustrated in playing in the championship match. (JP Abcede)
