Rams blast Fowler behind big-play offense By Kerry Sherman Eighth-ranked Akron utilized a big-play attack in their 54-6 win over Fowler last Friday night. The Rams scored on two plays of over 90 yards, and also had a 63-yard scoring play in the huge road victory over a Grizzlies squad that had pushed them to overtime a season ago. Akron held a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and then the Rams exploded. After a 28-6 second quarter, the Rams were comfortably in control at the half, 34-6. Fowler would get no closer, as Akron put the mercy clock rule into effect in the third period. Jared Clarkson racked up 297 yards and four touchdowns passing, including strikes of 63 and 92 yards. Jordan Herder was the recipient of the latter, helping him record six catches for 163 yards and two scores. Tyler Hottinger hauled in two catches for 92 yards and two scores, including the 63-yarder. Darrion Gibbs led the team in rushing with 95 yards on two carriers. One of those carries was good for a 94-yard touchdown. Clarkson added 90 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Akron could potentially take a top-five ranking into Saturdays road contest at Simla. Three teams ranked above the Rams (Hoehne, Simla and Sanford) all lost this past weekend.
