Randall -- Its been just over a week since a narrow 5-4 majority on the Supreme Court hijacked the judicial process on behalf of Americas ultra-rich and the corporations they run. The devastating fallout from the McCutcheon decision is beginning to crystallize: New York Times: Another Blow to Democracy. Washington Post: Combine McCutcheon with the decision in the Citizens United case and you can see that the court is systematically transferring more power to a tiny, privileged sliver of our people. Supreme Court dissenting Justice Stephen Breyer: if the court in Citizens United opened a door, [last weeks] decision we fear will open a floodgate. Im not just going to sit by and watch Americas wealthiest take over even more of our democracy. Over the past few days, Ive redoubled my efforts to pass the Fair Elections Now Act, which would curb the growing influence of big money -- and nearly 20,000 members of our Dic‌kDurb‌in.‌com online community have joined me in that call. Were up against very powerful opponents and well need all the help we can get. Will you join us too? If you need an example of why the dominating influence of the rich hurts average citizens, look no further than the debate over raising the federal minimum wage. Despite an overwhelming majority of Americans supporting the policy, congressional Republicans have failed to join the Democrats in supporting the initiative. Thats the influence of big money interests for you right there. My Fair Elections Now Act would curb the growing control the Courts rulings (McCutcheon as well as 2010s Citizens United) give the wealthy elite over our democratic process. My bill would encourage candidates to participate in elections without taking money from special interests or big donors. Instead, candidates who agree to limit their spending to amounts raised from grassroots donors would receive grants from the Fair Election Fund and discounts on advertising. Furthermore, the innovative My Voice Tax Credit would help counter the extreme influence secret big-money donors have now by encouraging more middle-class folks to contribute to campaigns. I fear for the future of our democracy if we dont act. But passing this legislation wont be easy -- Republicans love the judicial dismantling of campaign finance laws, because it disproportionately benefits them and their corporate friends.
