Random Independence Day Thoughts I’m 62 years old, in roughly the last ¼ of my life. Reflecting back, I realize how much my perspective on a variety of subjects has changed over the years. But something else has changed as well. I remember, decades ago, a country where success was admired, sought to be emulated. I remember when there was opportunity abound. Some people were successful, some people failed. Some people succeeded more so than others and some failed worse than others, but they had equal opportunity. People were free, free to succeed and free to fail. Today it seems I live in a country where we’re told of unequal opportunity, if there is any at all. If someone is successful they are vilified and punished through our tax system. Those who are unsuccessful are bailed out, subsidized, and shielded from failure. My country punishes producers and rewards non-producers. My country exhaults effort and ignores results. I do not know the country in which I live today. A country, in which it seems, we are not free at all. If there ever was a time when the populace and the media needed a very healthy dose of skepticism towards our government, we have very little. The result being a government out of control and a non-existent accountability. Yes, I do believe I’m a foreigner in my native land. Will the pendulum swing back? I doubt it. We’ve had it too easy for too long. Not since World War II have people in this country known real hardship. But, they will again when it’s too late. We’re currently at war again on a number of fronts: economic, social, political, and others I’m sure. I believe the result will be a small ruling class of elites and the rest of us….serfs My thoughts. I believe you are free to agree or disagree. At least I think you still are free to do so. Although even that could be debated.
