Random Stab, Joshuas POV, Wild Thing Wild thing! The crowd shouted along with the song. You make my heart sing! Joshua stood nervously in the door, Clark Kent glasses on, wondering how everyone knew he was a werewolf. It was supposed to be a big secret, the whole reason he was wearing the glasses and looking even more nerdy than normal. He didnt want to go out onto the playing field, once he was out there, the Deep Game would start. Whats your sign? Cathy appeared beside him, slinky black Vampira dress on, freaking him out. She was supposed to be out on the field, setting up the fortune telling booth on first base. But shed been in the barn, flirting with all the jocks just a while ago. Why was she even paying attention to him? He had his disguise on. No one should even be paying attention to him. Huh? Joshua didnt know what she meant by sign. The big electronic scoreboard, however, was flashing the picture of a werewolf half transformed. I bet youre an Pisces. I dont believe in that stuff. A clown car started to circle the playing field as the crowd continued to sing. You make everything groovy, Wild Thing! Joshua didnt want to walk onto the playing field. He wanted to be back home in his own bed, where he was safe. The clown car looped closer. What are you in Chinese Zodiac? Cathy asked. I dont know! His attention was wholly on the car. The monster was in the car. No one else seemed to notice the toy vehicle wheeling closer. If he stayed at the barn door, though, hed be trapped with all the others. He walked purposely out toward the pitcher mound. As he walked, the night darkened, the stadium lights dimming and the stars brightening. The ground grew rough to the recently shorn cornfield. The night grew still and biting cold. The hint of snow scented the air. Wild Thing! The crowd shouted somewhere in the darkness, the wild nearly a wordless roar. Ill tell you your fortune if you tell me your birthday. Cathy called from far away. I dont have one this year. Joshua whispered, fearful to draw attention to himself. The clown car had stopped. It was little red Smartcar and a huge beast was unfolding himself out of the drivers seat. The creature wore a human mask; Joshua thought it might be John F. Kennedy. Joshua stood frozen on the pitchers mound, downwind of the beast. The barn door was a golden square in the distance. Heres your card! Cathy flicked the tarot card from where she stood. He caught the card and tried to bring it into focus. A word was written across the bottom but it crawled away, refusing to be read. It was skeleton on a horse. John F. Kennedy started to growl lowly. He took off his mask, revealing the beast. He dropped down onto all fours and stalked toward the barn. Joshua stood transfixed. He had seen the impossible: a man becoming a wolf. Joshua wanted to bolt, run from the Deep Game, but it was his time to take stage center. From the darkness, the now invisible crowd roared for him to show his true self. Wild Thing! Wild Thing! Wild Thing! No. Joshua whispered. I dont want to play. But the screaming had started in the barn. The game had begun…
