Check the license plates of cars parked around the sites: these are barbarians who just got out of their caves with a fistful of euros, with as much culture as cabbage heads, and smell just as bad if not worse. Greek culture, Byzantine Orthodox culture and theology is incredibly sophisticated and requires a special kind of sensibility to appreciate it. The choice of the location for the monasteries should be a signal: no boors welcome here. These are ideals suspended in mid air, ethereal, abstract, intensely spiritual. And they are overrun by hordes of eastern european red necks, white trash, extremely white. Are they already drunk at 9 am? Probably not, but they act like college students on spring break in Ibiza or Fort Lauderdale. I got to talk to one of the guards: he was relieved to have a conversation with someone with some respect, interest and even reverence for the profound meaning of the site and its value. All I had to do was asking for the approximate date of construction and the historical background. I was a rarity. The crowd, in the meantime, was wondering about like this was Las Vegas or some cheap casinos on the Croatian coast -- which is where they should have gone, My suggestion to the monks: dont charge 3 euros a person. Charge 6 or 9: the trash will stay away and the good one will be happy to pay to be alone with these incredible places. Quality or quantity?
