Random Wednesday night thought: Sometimes I feel like I should go to college. Not because I want to, but because theres so much pressure these days to be educated and have a degree in something. But tonight I realized something quite amazing. If everyone went to college and had a degree...who would cook your food at a diner? Who would change your oil or change your tires on the side of the highway in 90 degree heat on a Saturday? Who would clean up after you at a hotel or wait on you at Fridays? Do you think the bartender that knows your favorite drink and keeps you buzzing all night has a masters in accounting? Or that the girl selling you gas and cigarettes has a bachelors degree in child care and development? Or lets say, the dorky girl busting her ass in a hot kitchen who knows exactly how you like your pancakes and bacon and has it ready before you even order...do you think shes educated? Probably not. But without these people youd have to do all these things yourself. I wonder if anyone thinks about that. Like I said, random thought. But next time you want to treat these people like theyre smaller than you, or imply that they should educate themselves for a better future, just remember your place. Most of us little people have CHOSEN to do the service jobs we do because we love it. Because we love making others a little happier, we love making their lives a little easier, we love being good at remembering your picky little preferences, and were actually ok with not getting paid well. What were NOT ok with is your blatant disrespect for the people that you NEED to make your life as pleasant as it is. Im totally ok with being just another working class hero, just another cog in the wheel that makes the world go round. And I respect others in my position for the extremely hard work that they do. Hell, its the people without degrees that sleep sound at night, because theyve sweated their asses off all day to make half of what an educated person makes. So to all my friends out there that are like me...I give you a ton of respect. Dont feel bad if you arent ever going to go to college. What you do is NECESSARY, not superfluous. So just keep on keeping on. And dont let the man get ya down. ;-)
