Random thoughts from the weekend: As good as the Steelers looked - TopicsExpress

Random thoughts from the weekend: As good as the Steelers looked in the first half of yesterdays game, that is how bad they looked in the second half of the game. Clearly, the Steelers came out of half time thinking the game was over. Kudos to the Browns and whatever their coaches said and did at halftime. Shame on the Steelers. I am glad, however, that all the criticism of Todd Haley has died down, at least for one week. If your offense has a receiver and running back gain over 100 yards and you put up 27 points, that should be enough to win every week. Once again, similar to the end of last year, the DEFENSE is not holding up their end of the deal. Ike Taylor (Doug Meaghers favorite guy) dropped a sure interception. It will be a long season if the defense does not step it up. After a devastating sweep at the hands of the Cardinals last week, the Pirates swept the Cubs over the weekend. They now own the second wild card spot. I am on record as saying they will not make the playoffs, and I saw nothing this week to change my mind about that. They should have beaten the Cubs. Its what you do against St. Louis and the Brewers that count. Not to mention the big four game series at the end of the year against the Braves which could be for all the marbles. Enjoy the rest of the season Pirates fans, because this team is going to look different (and in my opinion worse) next year. The Pitt football team beat Boston College this weekend. I said last week that Pitt Football was not big boy football and I stand by that. But for one week, they took it to an opponent in big boy fashion. James Conner looks like he could be a beast to try to stop. Hey Jane Popelka Hahn, Tom Brady lost. Boo Hoo! The NFL, more specifically Roger Goodell is in a horrible position with the Ray Rice deal. If someone in that office saw the video of him punching his now wife (and lets also mention, what is SHE thinking marrying a guy who knocked her out cold) and only suspended Rice for two games, calls should be made for the commish to step down. That is a ridiculous punishment for this. Yet, they cannot go back and try to add games to the punishment. If they tried to add games to the punishment, who would be the first people to cry foul...? The NFLPA. They would have a field day. Common sense should have prevailed in this whole scenario and it did not. An attempt by Goodell to add common sense by adding to the penalty would be met by a lack of common sense from the NFLPA who would fight to keep the suspension where it is. That is fine with me NFLPA, but you cant have it both way. If you want the Ray Rice suspension to stand as is, you also have to accept that all these drug suspensions by guys like Welker, Prater and Josh Gordon also should stand as is, even when a new drug policy is implemented. My wife, Becky Waddell Webb says that I should add some non sports related items to my random thoughts so here you are babe... This weekend I spent an enjoyable time with family and friends (I mean, we were watching sports, but still...). Its good to have people in your life who care about you and who you care about. Enjoy the little things gang...
