#RandomThoughtOfTheDay (warning,this is a long one): Ive always been fascinated by languages, and the way that, if you look closely enough, they reflect the culture of its speakers. Some time back I read the book 1984, and I was absolutely blown away by the notion of language as a means of controlling peoples thoughts and emotions. For context, just about every distopyian future movie you have ever watched draws from 1984 (The Hunger Games, V for Vendetta, The Matrix etc) . Anyway, more to the point, its a riveting political story about a totalitarian government, and an example of the government using language to control thoughts is the govt removing words like rebellion and freedom from the language - the idea is that eventually the population no longer has words to express such thoughts, and therefore generations later are unable to articulate such thoughts to begin with. Mind blowing, right? The more I think about it, the more I believe there is incredible power and truth to this notion. So chew on that thought for a while, as you contemplate how YOUR use of language is affecting your thoughts and emotions.
