Ranger is the only dog Ive ever had that actively teases me. His latest amusement is to bring his wet, slimy, well-chewed rawhide bone to the door. He knows he cant bring his bone into the house, and he also knows that, after he stands there for a while staring at me with the bone dangling from his lips like a cigar, Ill finally grow impatient with him, open the door, snatch the bone from his mouth, and toss it into his food bowl. Thus the game has concluded, and he comes inside, and I go wash off the dog slobber. The other night around eleven oclock, he brought his bone to the door, and looked in at Tim and me. In the past few days, I had grown tired of the slobbery bone game, and had begun waiting Ranger out--making him wait outside until he finally got the clue and dropped his bone. Since he was aware of what I was up to (dont tell me dogs dont think on a higher plane)!, he might stand there a long time until he finally dropped his bone! But at 11 this night, I was too tired to wait him out. I went outside to grab the bone. He became a dog slinky, moving to the left to elude me, and then quickly to the right. He was having the time of his life making Grandma hop around! I couldnt stop laughing at him, because he was being so ridiculous, and after Id finally grabbed the bone (by pinning him up against the door, mind you, to hold him still), we came inside. My husband, whod been watching the whole thing and hearing me laugh maniacally at my crafty dog, said, Tina, you love that dog. Well, how can you not love a dog that teases you? I know any dog trainer would tell me that I shouldnt let him get away with that, but he makes me laugh, and I figure hes taken on more lead than some soldiers, courtesy of the idiot that shot him--so it doesnt matter if hes a little bit of a tease. He makes me laugh!
