Ranjhanaa: Romance (Tick), Passion (Tick), Unrequited Love (Tick), Heartbreak (Tick) - this is what Ranjhanaa is and more. This Dhanush-debut vehicle from the Tanu Weds Manu director is a winner right from the start owing to the quirky and cynical take on the protagonist who is hopelessly in love with a Muslim girl, so much so that his entire life revolves around her. Dhanush exudes brilliance in every scene and makes the most striking debut in years, devouring every nuance of his character with panache. Sonam delivers her best here, while Abhay Deol is suitably charismatic for his role. The supporting ensemble is superb, especially Swara Bhaskar and Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub who are drenched in their characters to the core. The entire itsy-bitsy character crew deserves a thumbs up. Benaras comes alive through the lens of the cinematographers with the rustic lens complementing the wide range of hues which fill up the screen. The second half limps in parts owing to the political background story and the rallies but the performances lift up the narrative incredibly well as the story reaches the climax. One of the best parts of this hugely affecting movie is its wicked and cynical humor which interlaces with the darkest parts of the narrative. The acid-dripping dialogues are magnificent since they are bound to force chuckles in spite of the tragic situations a la "Anand." The songs blend well with the screenplay, "Tum Tak" and "Ranjhanaa Hua" are heartfelt compositions from the master, AR Rahman. Get your handkerchiefs ready, die-hard lovers. This is a rare film which is not to be missed, in spite of what you think of its characters and their decisions. Watch this flick for Dhanush, because this guy deserves all the appreciation more than any one else this year. Rating: 8/10
