Rant. I was fired from my last job about a year ago. Thats not the issue. The issue is the retirement plan I had at the time, which was basically a portion of my pay check went to buying stock in the company. Which was fine. They waiting until the end of the year to figure the average value of the stock, and gave me that averaged value. Which I can sort of understand, if the stock was doing poorly that specific week would have been bad for me. If it had been doing unusually well, would cost them more. So an average is fair. Id think it fair to run the average for the 365 days prior to my termination, but they went with Jan 1st to Dec 31st of 2013. Okay, I can understand that. First trouble is that it took them over 6 months to figure out what the average stock value was... that seems pretty stupid. If this were a new thing that had never happened before, I could see getting everyone to agree on how exactly you average the value could take time. But this is a big company, such things should be well established. Finding average value should be a matter of minutes, not months. Okay, okay, is a big company, they have a lot to go over, my former employee isnt a priority... that still puts it at weeks, not months. Okay, fine, took a while to figure out the average stock value. They knew how many shares of stock I had. Since Im technically opting out early, I take a hit of 20 percent, which is annoying, but acceptable. So price per share times number of shares, times 0.80 equals the money Im supposed to get. Now, do i want that money in a check, direct deposited into a bank account, rolled over into a different invenstment account, or something else? Check please. Okay. PLEASE WAIT TWO MONTHS WHILE WE WRITE YOUR CHECK. This is not okay. You know the amount, you know my address, you know how to send the money. If this was a period of me making sure its what I really want I could sort of understand, but it isnt, I get a check, regardless of if I change my mind at this point. Its just them sitting on their ass, holding on to my money, for no good reason. A delay of a few days I could understand, need to get the important guy to sign off on the details, fine. If that takes two months, you do not deserve to be in busniess. So yeah, Im a little annoyed. It doesnt help that I could really use a bit of cash right now today to pay off some looming bills, but would be stupid even without a pressing pile of bills.
