Rant: There were bigger and more politically loaded snubs that are getting quite justified attention, but Oscar continues to disappoint me most as a film enthusiast in the score department. Two nominations for Desplat (!!), Zimmers perennial bombast (now with organ), and a bit of elegant plinky-planky from two awards-circuit newcomers. In addition to the man problem, its as if because Steven Price won for the shattering discord of Gravity two years ago (a remarkable score), were good for complex percussive / electronic / sound collage music for a few years. So no Birdman, and no Gone Girl, and no *Under the Skin.* Maybe Im still smarting from Jonny Greenwoods disqualification for There Will Be Blood, and maybe this isnt comparatively important, but recognizing novelty and difficulty in film music should still happen. I submit the perfection of Scarlett Johanssons alien seductress ensnaring her first victim with a terrifyingly apt modified string riff (3:00 onward) becoming an extraterrestrial belly dance from Mica Levy.
