Rapid metro officials blame road widening agency for waterlogging in cyber city GURGAON: The Rapid Metro authorities have refused to acknowledge that waterlogging that occurred in the Cyber City vicinity on Sunday was because of the ongoing Metro construction project. “Recent reports have attributed various incidents of waterlogging and road mishaps to Rapid Metro in Gurgaon. We wish to inform that we have completed all construction work at the ground level and currently, the finishing touches are under way at the Phase 1 stations,” said a Rapid Metro spokesperson. “We would like to reiterate that no construction work on the road is under way by Rapid Metro. There are multiple constructions being carried out by various agencies in and around Cyber City, including the road widening project, which could have resulted in these incidents,” the spokesperson added. The authorities insisted that the Metro structure is very safe and can weather extreme conditions. “The structure is very safe as the foundations are designed for submerged condition, i.e., for heavy rainfall and flooding and extremely high water table,” the spokespersons said. He said the authorities have conducted exhaustive soil tests, which includes initial load test, routine load tests and all chemical tests for soil properties. “Structural safety from earthquakes is ensured by seismic responsive design as per the standards. Bridges are designed to take dynamic loads and impact loads. All the piers and columns are protected from possible impact from moving trucks and other vehicles by use of crash barriers and fenders,” he added. The private agency that is implementing the road widening agency on behalf of DLF and HUDA is IL&FS Engineering Service. It is the same agency that is implementing the Rapid Metro work as well. However, its officials too deny any role in this matter. “The two cars that got damaged due to the cave-in were parked on loose soil and therefore the ground could not withstand the load,” said an official. Meanwhile, a residents’ group is planning to hold a protest on Thursday against all the private agencies, including Rapid Metro, that are undertaking construction projects in the Cyber City vicinity. “All these agencies have failed to prevent incidents of waterlogging and road cave-ins. They have been unable to prevent water from seeping into our homes and none of them have implemented rainwater harvesting. Had they done so, so much of water could have been conserved this season,” said a member of the group.
