Raptor Research Assistant Conduct biological field work at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, including recording field observations, conducting data management, and assisting with interpretation of field observations. Field work is based on extant study design and protocols, on familiarity with the scientific method and literature, and on professional experience. Includes surveys for birds, mostly raptors, and specified environmental variables; observations of bird behavior and associated environmental activity. Interact with military, university, federal and state government, and non-government cooperators to ensure field methods are implemented in accordance with project goals and objectives. Assist with scheduling by integrating field work with the study design and with the schedule and location of activities of the Dugway Proving Ground (DPG) mission as conveyed by DPG personnel and other factors that affect scheduling (e.g., weather, etc.). Ensure coordination of work and quality control of data gathering. Record and compile data, including review for errors of omission and recording or transcription. Help prepare reports of field work and their relevance to the study goals and objectives. Surveys require individual to work with a variety of other field technicians and biologists. Good communication skills are required. Work location and responsibilities require applicant must have the capability to endure strenuous physical activity and unpredictable conditions in extreme hot, cold, wet, and windy weather, with or without accommodation, including but not limited to steep hiking on un-trailed ground in rugged mountain terrain and desert, during all seasons, while carrying a pack with field equipment (e.g., binoculars, scope, field notebook, GPS, camera, rangefinder, hand-held radio, etc.). Applicant must have the knowledge and ability to operate a 4 wheel drive truck in off-road terrain and conditions. Must work harmoniously with others, and be especially meticulous in detail and quality control of data collection, recording, and entry. At a minimum you should have: • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Wildlife, or related Field • One year of professional experience in similar type of work, or one year of graduate program experience • Valid driver’s license and U.S. Citizenship is required • Education about scientific method, basic biology, and ecology • Basic writing and mathematics skills; computer software, including Excel, Word, etc. • Bird species identification and use of binoculars and spotting scope Preferentially, you will have: • Raptor survey and identification skills • Global Positioning System (GPS) and geospatial knowledge and skills • Familiarity with wildlife radio tracking and associated data • Data analysis skills such as GIS, statistical packages Salary and benefits: Position duration is for approximately 12 months. The position will start as soon as possible when a suitable applicant is found and will remain open until filled. Housing at or near field site will most likely not be available. Successful candidate should plan on securing housing away from DPG.
