Rare and Adorable An albino axolotl, a salamander that spends its whole life in its larval form, crawls in an aquarium in Kuala Lumpur in 2008. Fewer than 1,200 individuals exist in the wild, and the ones that do only live in Lake Xochimilco, in Mexico City. Listed as near threatened on the IUCN Red List, the species faces two big threats: invasive species such as carp and tilapia, which feed on axolotls; and humans, who catch and roast the salamanders, which are considered a delicacy in Mexico.
