Rashmi at travel4all.in Healthier Indian Food There is this myth about Indian food being all greasy and spicy and laden with butter or ghee. Well that is not exactly true! Take the example of South Indian food, which is steamed and made using almost little oil. Then there are tandoori dishes from North India, which have been grilled and roasted in a clay oven to retain the natural taste and nutrition. Come more towards the eastern side and you will find treats for the weight watchers with boiled specialties like momos and thupkas from the North East or the grilled fishes from Bengal cooked in a bit of mustard oil. Towards the west, there is the steamed dhoklas from Gujarat or the lovely pohas from Maharasthra and even the yummy dal and roasted baatis from Rajasthan. Of course, if you have them with cream laden dips or pour gallons of ghee for that special ‘ma’ ka touch, then you will only be piling on calories. If chosen sensibly, all forms of Indian food can be converted into healthy dishes, with a twist here and there, which simply adds to the taste! So the next time you want some Punjabi paratha, go for the wheat option instead of white flour and roast it without oil. If still tempted for some butter, just drizzle a bit on the top instead of making it into a grease-laden mess!
