The results of this study confirm what many already believed: that Tikal got too big and its agriculture too resource-demanding. The collapse of Tikal and other Mayan city states led to migrations and eventually to reforestation of large tracts of the Peten. This is home to the winter populations of many North American songbirds such as Wood Thrush, Worm-eating Warbler, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, as well as many residents like toucans and howler monkeys.
