Ray Schultz says, its been over 50 years since the boys in a photo - TopicsExpress

Ray Schultz says, its been over 50 years since the boys in a photo boarded a school bus and left Manual High School for CYO Field on West 16th St. When the bus returned to the southside a few hours later, after a 35-0 win over Cathedral, it carried arguably the best high school football team from Indiana...maybe even to this day. The thrill of that night, and that season, is burned forever in Rays memory. It had been since 1931, that the program had been public school city champions. In 1955, six new coaches joined Noah Ellis and in 1956, the reserve team went 10-0 and won the city championship. A year later, Manual went 8-2 and with quarterback Steve Wright running the Redskins tricky misdirection offense and just two seniors gone to graduation, Manuals players knew that 58 would be special. As Ray Shultz talks to reporter Kyle Neddenriep, from the Indianapolis Star, he points at a team photo and his voice cracks, Foster, the fullback, died recently in a fire, and of the 30 people in that photo, only 18 are still alive he said. As Ray stares at this photo I posted of the team carrying coach Ellis off the field after the win over Cathedral, Shultz was nowhere to be seen in the photo, then he says, Im probably over here he said, pointing to the left of the photo, Im sure I was embracing the cheerleader, who later became my wife. Thanks for this article...Kyle/Star.
