Re: Sanders, Warren, their support of Israel They say important things about economics, politics and democracy that nobody else is saying. They also support aid to Israel despite Gaza and much else. Im told that means they must be rejected, root and branch, as corporate stooges and Nazi enablers. I disagree with that. Does someone who puts a buck on a collection plate support pedophilia? Does the fact that my tax dollars support pediatric oncology research forgive me for also supporting white phosphorus? If I need something in a place or time when i have to get it at Wal-Mart, if I use a cell phone dependent on coltan mining in the Congo, if I buy factory-farmed food or drive ten unnecessary miles? I do NOT raise these examples to trivialize others views, or claim exclusive virtue. But i do suggest that its a more general phenomenon of life, and not just politics, to be forced to make imperfect choices, and to do that as best you can while keeping the conversation with you, other human beings and nature going. That is a highly complex thing to do, cannot be done perfectly, but nevertheless must be done. And people will disagree. I would not, for instance, support a Nazi who ran death camps while offering scholarships to universities and supporting humane animal shelters. I do not think Israels reprehensible conduct in Gaza rises to the level of Naziism. Others disagree. We nonetheless have to find a way to support the like of Warren and Sanders when theyre saying important, decent things about the economy that nobody else is saying. The alternative is withdrawal, which never works, ever.
