Re braiding and sprang: My experiment about this old Peruvian band gave me more suggestion to compare Braiding with Sprang. The right sample is as replica by braiding as shown yesterday, the left one is made by loop-braiding, and the middle is made by sprang. Braiding is a very nice method to make bands/belts. It is available to make varied motifs/pattern, because the one end of the threads keeps always free of tension. But also it requires our sufficient skill to handle the threads properly. Sprang needs a fixed warp setting with precise tension, so, it makes easier to work and available to have something more wide and long. However it is naturally more restrictive in its design than braiding, that is why the length of each thread remains different according to the pattern made. It occurs a similar result in loop-braiding. You see, for example, the right sample was hard to be finished because of the pattern which makes some threads to remain shorter and then inconvenient to go on working. The ancient artisans knew very well the characteristics of each technique and took the method more convenient and suitable to make what they want, considering carefully of its size, material, design and form. Re this serpent design, I found it so clever. It is easier to make short bands and then join 8 parts, hiding messy end-parts with looping. I am deeply impressed whenever I can find their wisdom in my experimental study.
