Read: Acts of the Apostles 5:34-42; John 6:1-15 It can be easy to demonise people with whom we do not get on, or who do not take the same approach to life as us. It would be easy to condemn and dismiss the opponents of Jesus, but in the first reading we see that they are honest people who are also seeking to know what is the right thing to do. That is not always easy: the choices we have to make can be very complicated at times and what is the right thing to do is not always clear to us. The Gospel begins and ends by telling us Jesus had left large crowds: he needed time to be away from them. Their expectations were not his: he needed time with his Father in prayer to know the path that God wanted him to walk rather than the path the crowd wanted. Perhaps being crowned king and starting a political revolution could seem the answer to what people needed; they certainly thought that the peace and security and well-being they sought could be gained by political power. The people thought Jesus was the leader like Moses who would lead them to victory over their enemies. They too were seeking what they thought the best way for their lives. Perhaps in our search for what is best for us, we need to begin by asking what it is we truly need. Yes we need food and clothing, but we also need food for our soul and only God can give us a food that satisfies that hunger.
