Read this document for some helpful pointers regarding judging. Another bit of advise, be specific when describing something. Medium to low hop bitterness doesnt help anyone, is it medium or low, or perhaps medium-low? Be specific. Also, go through the BJCP guidelines and pick out the styles you like and know, and the ones you dislike or know nothing about. Why? Because the judge coordinator will want to have you judging styles that you generally like and know, not something you hate and cant stand. If you decide to someday pursue becoming a real BJCP judge youll need to learn about all styles regardless of your personal likes, but for your first time its Ok to stick with what you like. I for example, generally do not like sour beers so I will tell the judge coordinator that I prefer to not judge that category. Maybe you love hoppy beers so you could suggest to judge IPAs. For some real adventure try the Spice/Herb/Vegetable or Specialty Beer categories. Some of the most interesting and wonderful beers Ive ever tasted came from this category, but also some of the worst too! Fun! Lastly, if youve entered a beer into this competition, make sure you tell the coordinator what style it is so you dont end up judging that category; a serious breech of ethics that will not be tolerated. Less than a week to go so catch up on any missed assignments soon!
