Reader Mail (Irish): I was pleased to see your St. Patrick’s Day article in the SF Chronicle. The analogy is very apt and one we need to be reminded of. One of my great-grandfathers stood on the streets of Boston looking for work just like the Latinos do near my local Home Depot. And the proper Bostonians despised his presence. My namesake, John O’Brien, was illiterate. Every one of his great grandchildren went to college. I got a Doctorate in Business Administration from Harvard where George Cabot Lodge (grandson of the Senator) was one of my mentors. Immigration has made the country what it is today. One of our main competitive edges is the ability to attract the ambitious, hard working and talented people from around the world. The Latino immigration is just a continuation of that. We will change them and they will change us – for the better.
