Reader Survey Results: The Site & Guest Writers: I’m not sure that is very conclusive to be honest. Some way down the line I might ask Russell to trial a magazine format and see what people make of it. But I don’t think that’s going to be a high priority at the moment. Here are some comments… The rate of the content which is produced matches the layout perfectly. Don’t have to go searching for articles, and is the nature of the beast, most people will only be interested in the most recent news. I assume that the proposed outlay would then be able to feature more than the current dose of articles. More the merrier. It will look to similar to Claret & Hugh and Kumb – WHTID is different because of the layout I visit each page individually and directly from my feed reader. So I dont arrive directly at the start page. When I do go there – to check I havent missed anything or to visit anything which my feed reader hasnt posted yet – I find myself scrolling a long way. Takes too long to search for articles – should also think about including a search function where readers can search by topic Might be an ok idea. The problem currently is that comments move to the new blog with the old one abandoned even if there is still stuff to say. No point as audience on next post. This is a difficult one, I like the style as it is but if I miss looking at the site for a couple of days then I have to trawl through the page to see what I’ve missed. If it had the ‘magazine’ look then it would be a lot easier and quicker. Option 2 is the ‘Claret & Hugh’ system, an embuggerance Please don’t make this change! The current set-up is perfect, in my opinion. I usually read the site on my cellphone and when I scroll down and get to an article/title I’ve already read I know that I’m all caught up on content. So, the next section looked at the site’s writers… Well that’s fairly conclusive! You also rated each of the site authors either 7/10 or 8/10, so thanks for that! Here’s another fairly conclusive one… Slightly less conclusive, but pretty categoric. I think we’ll see how this one goes. People have tailed off in sending in guest posts, which is a shame, but I will issue another call to arms soon. I think scattering a few throughout the schedule is a good idea, as well as using Thursdays to publish quite a few. Here are some of your comments… It’s no good to post guest pieces, only to have them overwhelmed by the current news of results, match analysis etc. If we are to have people making an effort to write, especially those who are not professional writers, then it is fairer to them to allow the thread time to develop. Some have been exceptionally good. Rather than have a pre-determined ration, just drip feed them onto the site as and when they are available and relevant, ie topical. Doesn’t have to be structured that a guest has to post. If the article is good, carry it. If it’s not don’t publish it. If there’s more than one decent offering, carry them all during the week. It’s about quality of content, if guests submit better than what the site has to offer why not share that with your readers…? I’ve said only post in quieter periods, but by that I mean keep them regular. There’s no need to be too specific with when they appear (unless they’re new ‘features’, like the Tuesday post’). The quality has generally been very good, so as long as they’re an interesting take on things (The discussion of a female manager, for example) then I’d say just post away. Certainly helps to stimulate debate between commenters and helps steer things away from the general discussions about the manager and so on. “Ordinary readers.” That lovely bit of unintentional arrogance / egotism says so much about the people who run this blog. Yes, guest posts can be very interesting – particularly if they widen the debate. A guest post that focuses on whether BFS is doing a good job shouldn’t be posted, but one which introduces a new subject should. Quality rather than quantity though …. I’ve really enjoyed the guest posts, especially from Neil Clack and Ray the Hammer. Ideally you need a couple of new contributors. Some of the guest posts have been excellent and whether I agree with the article, they always generate good debate……..So keep them coming. Haven’t enjoyed the guest posts. There has been too many for starters, no need to have so many articles each or every few days. The standard has been generally poor I feel. Ranging from the poorly written and bad grammar etc to the downright silly or stupid and ridiculous pieces. Also in relation to the regular writers I feel the type of ‘should we sign Jack Jones’ type of article written on on the basis of one weak Twitter rumour of paper speculation is totally unvalid. The guest posts are good but, you can have too much of a good thing – information overload? You can only You can only take in so much! I’d keep guest posts to quieter periods. Do the job of an editor. Don’t post too many, don’t post ones going over the same ground, but do post one or two a week if they are worthwhile. A newspaper has space constraints so they are forced to make editorial decisions. The danger of a website is that everything is posted because the guest has gone to the trouble of writing the article and you don’t want to disappoint them.. But be wary of posting too much that is overly negative (rather than constructively critical). The recent article about Carlton Cole (that, I believe, Iain took from a KUMB contributor) was excellent and made me think a little differently about Carlton! Think more and be more pro-active about diversity. Have posts covering the Ladies team, views from the young supporters, experiences of disabled supporters and views from the first time attendees (especially from the local community near the ground) Guests posts were great and I liked reading different people’s views on things, except perhaps the interminable Allardyce out articles. To me it’s irrelevant that they’re guest posts as I think you should generally restrict the number of posts in a day as I didn’t have the time to read them and all the comments as I do have a life outside West Ham ;) You can tell when a topic goes ‘stale’ as that’s when the chatting starts in earnest. bit.ly/1ugjAFC
