Real Clear History on historical memory. I heard firsthand stories about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl from my grandmother, and about World War II from great-uncles on both sides of the family. One great-uncle, who lived until about 1980, was in World War I. My mother told Old West stories she heard from her grandfather, who was a ranch hand and lawman in West Texas and fought border bandits while in the Customs Service. The story thats come down from my dads side is that supposedly they left Arkansas and fled to Texas right after the Civil War because they got in a feud, and somebody bushwhacked one of them, and my great-great-grandfather Dillard Hardwick Chappell then bushwhacked that guy and they all left as fast as they could. One of that bunch of Chappells went to the state pen for stealing mules in Arkansas. Actually, my ancestors were quite a violent lot. realclearhistory/articles/2013/11/05/patton_ike_and_my_teenage_boys_152.html
