Real Estate is Broken - What are We Gonna Do about it? If this blog is to be relevant, if it can be used to change the real estate industry, if we are serious about raising the bar, I am going to expose what is going on which might make a lot of people in the industry squirm and should pique the interest of folks who own or want to own real estate. My hope is that a lot of smart agents will be open to the ideas proposed and share their solutions to practicing real estate at a higher level. I’ve watched what has been going on for over 20 years and I’m going to talk about it. I’m going to explain what is really going on behind the curtain. I’m going to make concrete suggestions for making this a more transparent business. There are a lot of very good real estate agents who are committed to bringing the highest value to their clients; unfortunately there are also a lot of self-serving agents practicing real estate legally and according to the code of ethics, but are not committed to always doing the right thing by the client. The real estate culture and climate has condoned some practices that, when analyzed, are very good for agents and their brokers, but unsuspecting sellers and buyers are not getting the value they deserve. I expect a lot of flack. I expect a lot of justification. I expect a lot of defensiveness. I expect some times I’ll be wrong and will stand corrected. But count on me for candor. Additionally I’ll add funny stories, good real estate tips and timely market data. I promise to respect all opinions, can I ask the same in return? This blog is dedicated to the profession. To the noble job of helping people acquire real estate and sell it at its highest value (and if an agent is involved in a sale where the Seller is not maximizing their investment, the Seller should at least understand the decisions they are making — folks will be ok with leaving money on the table in certain circumstances, but we need to make sure they understand the decisions they are making before they gift equity to the Buyer inadvertently). Please be open-minded about the ideas proposed. So many of us are stuck and comfortable doing things the way we’ve always done them. RE/MAX Leading Edge is truly leading the way with a concrete and different approach to practicing real estate. Homeowners and future homeowners, follow this blog to understand how to protect yourselves and your value. Fellow agents, ask yourself, “Are you part of the problem or part of the solution?” I welcome constructive and polite feedback and I don’t always need to have the last word. Well, not always. ;) Yours truly, Linda O’Koniewski with the blessing of my fabulous business partners and the co-owners of RE/MAX LEADING EDGE Paul Mydelski, Eileen Hamblin and Steve Chuha
