Real life rarely follows the model precisely, especially at the extremes. In the real world, even functions of a single variable are subject to constraints. These constraints can be imposed by the laws of physics, the laws of man, or laws of others that we do not understand. The ideal case scenarios of our coursework are thus turned into a mockeries of themselves that have no definitive solution and must thus be optimized into a window (or pocket) of acceptable outcomes. The more rigid the constraints are, the smaller the true region of optimization becomes. So lets not be wishy-washy about this. Lets not beat around the bush. You have to know the difference between the outcomes that you can live with, and the outcomes that you cannot live with. Do you know what that means? That means that when it comes to your life, the constraints (and in some cases even the initial conditions) ARE DEFINED BY YOU. Know where you stand. Know who you are, who you were, and how you got to where youre at. Learn from your mistakes (this is YOUR experiment after all, get the most out of it), and adjust your constraints accordingly. Continuous improvement is the empirical route to optimization. Always try. Im going to say that again........ALWAYS try.
