Real talk. Last week, like a good citizen, my uncle went to the Shawnee County courthouse to update his address in order to vote. He brought his drivers license and another form of identification that should have been more than enough, but was asked for his birth certificate. Thank goodness he has one; however... 1) To update voting information, a birth certificate is NOT required but Kobachs new law has caused so much confusion, my uncle almost became one of the 22,000 Kansans suspended in the registration process and unable to exercise their right to vote this year. 2) I cannot help but wonder if my uncle were not Latino would the person in the office have asked to see his birth certificate. The SAFE Act, drafted by Secretary Kobach, passed by the KS Legislature, and signed by Governor Brownback is a threat to our democracy. Truly. No hyperbole. While trying to register voters on campus, our task was made 1000x more difficult. This is voter suppression plain and simple. What kind of democratic government believes 22,000 disenfranchised voters in an acceptable price to pay for less than 20 voter fraud cases in the past two decades? So I urge you to vote, for those who have had their voices taken from them. Here is all the information you need: electioncenter.ksdp.org/ Also. If you have seen voter suppression or if you are being barred from voting, contact me/the KDP. #GOTV #VoterSuppression #ksleg #ksgov #kseln
