‘Realistic Human 3D Character Animation Vs Toon 3D Character Animation #Kochadaiyaan #3Danimation Before I jump into criticizing Kochadaiyaan 3D animation, I want to share some of my learning/experiences of 3D characters animation from technical perspective. When I first saw the Kochadaiyaan 3D animation, my thought gone back to my previous company Element K - an eLearning company, where we did some 3D characters animation. We had a head office at US and we were assigned to create 3D character animations for a project. First we started with real human-like characters and tried to animate it, but we found that they look too weird because of their unnatural body movement and their facial expressions. When we presented it to our US head office, they also felt the same and they said that even the Hollywood face the same issue because of creating realistic human characters. They asked to try toon type of characters instead of realistic human characters. They gave a best example of comparison between the movies Polar Express and The Incredibles . ‘The Polar Express’ didnt go well because of the odd facial animation and unnatural body movements, whereas the movie The Incredibles was a huge hit because of the toon/comic style of characters. Character Artists and Animators of the The Incredibles’ had the liberty to play around with character’s facial movements, stretch and the squash the characters body to their will. Check this link to understand in detail of Human Character Animation: The Incredibles vs. The Polar Express awn/vfxworld/creative-human-character-animation-incredibles-vs-polar-express Another great example is the movies - ‘Final Fantasy vs. Sherk and Monster Inc Comparing to the Sherk and Monster Inc’ the movie Final Fantasy didnt went well, again for the bad review for the same Realistic Human 3D Characters Animation. Though a massive animation was went into Final Fantasy movie the critics felt the body movements were robotic and failed in getting the facial-expressions right. These are very old examples. But after the failures of Polar Express and Final Fantasy the Hollywood hesitate to do such projects. Then after many years Avatar’ came. Cameron’s new filming technique works something like a video game. In traditional CGI scenes, motion capture is used on actors, and the images are blended into synthetic environments in post-production. In AVATAR, Cameron uses a virtual camera to explore how characters look in the environment as they are being filmed. In other words, the director can see and manipulate the final product while he is still shooting the movie. This allowed Cameron to find the most realistic camera angles, the most intense movements, and the right flow between recorded and artificial. Here we need to note one important point, again Cameron didnt used realistic human 3D characters, and instead he created the characters with a blend of human and animal, also modified the proportion of the characters to real human characters. Since they are aliens we are ready to accept it. Using the same technique Spielberg brought the comic character Tintin to the big screen. Though the characters are human you may note that they have exaggerated comical features and facial expressions as created by the creator Hergé. Most of the Hollywood animated films follow this technique. They grab real actor’s expressions, body movements, voice etc. and then apply to toon or alien characters. Examples: The Smurfs, Fantastic Four, Hell Boy etc. Now you may ask, it’s not possible to create realistic 3D human characters and animate with right body movement and facial expressions? Sure, it’s possible. With so advancing technology nothing is impossible. I am also waiting for that time, where you and I cant differentiate between a real actor and 3d actor in movies. Coming to Kochadaiyaan 3D animation... nothing to say, I believe Soundarya Rajinikanth also known all these factors/facts of animating realistic human 3D characters. She might also well know of what the result would be. If she might have created a toon character of Rajini, sure the character would be more popular among kids as Jackie Chan toon character does. Okay, let us keep this aside. What happened to the BG texturing and lightning? Looks like 90s video games. Apart from animation there’s a neat story line and grand music.
