Realizing despite exposing my son to my eclectic musical tastes, I - TopicsExpress

Realizing despite exposing my son to my eclectic musical tastes, I need to do a better job of addressing his interest in modern rap. I broach the subject, dont get me wrong. But I think I need to spend more time teasing out why it isnt ideal to be sold on how cool this or that artist is simply due to beats and jive, creative rhetoric. Beyond the veil of perceived hip, lyrical prowess lies the encouragement and perpetuation of stereotypes, artificial and negative Black identity, misogyny, violence, homophobia, and so on. Why dragoon and enslave ourselves into regressive, anti-intellectual husks that limit us to caricature representations that enable social constructions to further form and levy upon us an unfavorable meme? I understand not *all* rappers promote such ideals, however, Im referring to the ones that my son listed as the ones he frequently listens to. I will continue to diffuse these unseemly messages with disabuse and appeal to possible alternatives within the hip hop genre that are more positive and meaningful in word and image.
