Reason #28 for Natural Childbirth Have It Your Way! We talked earlier in the month about positions to use for birth and how important movement is to being the baby into the best position. Movement and positioning is just as important if not more so when it comes to delivery. Did you know that the worst possible position to have a baby is flat on your back? And yet, this is how the majority of Americans deliver in hospitals. When a woman lays on her back, her tailbone curves up into her pelvis, narrowing the opening for baby by a couple centimeters. (Ask anyone who has delivered both a 7 lb. baby and a 10 lb. baby if a couple centimeters really makes a difference!) The tailbone provides a "speed bump" that baby has to get up and over to get out. Also, laying on your back is the worst possible position because it compresses the vena cava and allows less blood and oxygen flow to baby. Only a natural birth allows for the freedom to birth your baby in a squatting position, on your hands and knees, or on a specialty birth stool. These allow the biggest opening in your pelvis for baby to get out. Your body and your baby will thank you.
