Reason #4 Joe Straus should not be Speaker of the Texas House. Republican House members will confide, if they feel comfortable enough in the conversation, that one key reason they wont oppose Joe Straus is because of the fear of retribution. Simply put, State Reps believe that if they oppose Straus, they wont get any substantive bills passed during the session. They may even go so far as to say: Those three folks (naming various State Reps) -- they opposed Straus and as a result, they got nothing passed. My district expects me to get things done. Others will simply express their fear of being marginalized. Think about it for a moment. Texas House Republicans have a significant majority in the Texas House. And yet theyre unable to have a fair and open debate about who should be Speaker of the Texas House, without fear of retribution from the existing (Republican) Speaker. Isnt that enough to say: Enoughs enough? This is not the Sopranos. Were not playing games. These are our elected representatives in Austin. News alert to Republican State Reps: If youre concerned that Straus will marginalize you for opposing him, thats a pretty good indication you need to oppose him. Now. Grow a spine and oppose Joe Straus. Were watching.
