Reasons to be grateful, day 4: (i) I was decorating the new place with my iPod blazing away in my ears and was repeatedly grateful to all the great songwriters out there. What an amazing gift to be able to combine rhythm, melody, harmony, meaning and feeling in one handy 4-minute package. I got particularly lost in Phil Campbells glorious Faith, Hope and You...for those of you who know the song, the goosebumps moment is when he sings maybe Im a dreamer / but tell me is that wrong? / for I wake up knowing / that my dreams are showing / who I am and then the string quartet delivers that little lilting riff that turns away from the tune to reflect the feeling in Phils voice. (ii) And neatly segueing onto a topic Ive avoided so far. When I first played Di Faith, hope and you and she thought it was brilliant I knew she was The One. What we have together is amazing - I cant really now recall the life I led before I met her 12 years ago (and were teetering on the edge of 10 years of married life now). No-one else understands me like Di, and I dont suppose anyone else would put up with me so generously as she does! I wish everyone else similar fortune in their choice of life partner. (iii) Oh yeah, and chocolates great, innit? Nothing like a Marthon (as I still like to call them) when youre totally knackered and covered in a mix of sweat and emulsion!
