Rebekah has had a cold all week with runny nose and symptoms that usually happen when she isnt feeling good - like slow digestion, gagging when going potty, malaise but wont sleep at night... I just figured she DID have a cold. But I decided to test her urine this morning and, sure enough, raging UTI! So we are at the doctors office right now waiting to get it officially tested and do a quick CBC. We had been doing well to stay UTI free lately and it didnt occur to me to check her urine, especially since we have struggled with legitimate upper respiratory illnesses several times this year (hospitalizations). I am now kicking myself for NOT performing my first line of defense test - urine dip stick. Rebekahs UTIs never present normally. Her urine doesnt stink. She doesnt have a fever. She starts dumping urine instead of peeing a little at a time more frequently... And this is actually fairly common among trisomy kids like her! But it isnt documented anywhere and doctors think we are nuts when our kids come in with upper respiratory illnesses and we insist it is a UTI. This is just a reminder to me to stay vigilant in these checks and to keep reminding other trisomy families (especially with infants) to ALWAYS CHECK FOR A UTI when there are symptoms of upper respiratory infections and bowel distress! Oh, best part for those who are familiar with UTIs... Rebekah NEVER gets common bacteria. Out of the many UTIs shes had, its never the normal e-coli variety. This time it is some sort of gram positive bacteria that doesnt produce nitrites, or something like pseudomonas aeruginosa. Guess well find out when the culture comes back!
